Started his career in 2000 at the language publisher ALC Press Inc. (株式会社アルク), where as a director he worked on introducing language education and online education to public educational institutions in Japan. After the company's listing, he became president of a subsidiary and then went independent. His activities mainly consist of consulting and investment in the education and food fields. He serves as outside auditor of Air Trip Inc. (株式会社エアトリ), outside auditor of GMO OMAKASE Inc., outside director of Albirex Niigata, and strategy advisor for corporate investment attraction for Miyazaki City, among other roles as strategy advisor and outside officer to listed companies, startups and municipalities, and is also involved in managing a professional soccer team. Graduated from the University of California, Berkeley, Department of Political Economy; holds a Master of Education (Ed.M.) from the Harvard Graduate School of Education and a Master of Philosophy (MPhil.) from the University of Cambridge; completed all coursework toward the doctoral program in the Department of Advanced Interdisciplinary Engineering, Graduate School of Engineering, University of Tokyo, without receiving the degree. Professor at the Kyoto College of Graduate Studies for Informatics.
