Niel has held technology executive (CIO/CTO) and operations executive positions (COO), often stepping in to lead turnaround roles, and is currently the CIO of Boart Longyear. His notable accomplishments include transforming a manufacturing business into a software company, rapidly modernizing a telecommunications company, and developing numerous successful technology products and artificial intelligence tools. He is also the author of "The Agile Culture" (2014, Addison Wesley) and "Stand Back and Deliver" (2009, Addison Wesley). Niel has earned multiple IT leadership awards, such as the ProphIT award, CIO Magazine 100, and the Golden Bridge award. In 2020, he was recognized as one of the top 20 CIOs changing the future of technology.
