Cell-free RNA (cfRNA) and neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) circulating in the blood of autoimmune patients are the molecules which initiate the inflammatory cascade. Once inside cells, these nucleic acids trigger RNA sensors which turn on the production of numerous cytokines which ultimately gives rise to the clinical symptoms observed in diseases such as Sjögren's and lupus. Our drug molecules are enzymes which remove these nucleic acids and reduce inflammation and disease symptoms. Our drugs are not immunosuppressive because they remove the cause of the inflammation rather than inhibit key elements of the immune system which are required to combat viral infection.
